ABOUT LESSONS

Whether you are a beginning, intermediate, or advanced student, taking private lessons on a regular basis is an important part of any musician’s development in becoming the most proficient player they can be and will help to enhance the enjoyment and ability to play music. I do not expect perfection from my students nor do I expect them to aspire to become music majors or professional musicians. However, I do expect that students are self-motivated with enthusiasm and curiosity, have a positive attitude and practice diligently every day for steady progress.

My emphasis is to share with each student the invaluable knowledge that I have acquired to establish the fundamental building blocks needed to learn to play the French horn easily and correctly.

Private horn lessons include the following elements of study:

  • Fundamental solidification including tone development, technique, articulation, breath control, flexibility, and range extension

  • Musicality

  • How to practice efficiently

  • Solo literature, etude and orchestra excerpt study

  • Playing duets with teacher

  • Preparing for auditions

All private lessons are tailored to suit students desires, needs and goals.

Lesson rate:

$ 60.00 (60 min.) due after each lesson.

Cancellation must be within 24 hours before lessons. If I don't receive notice, I expect full payment for the missed lesson.

Taking lessons with Achim is an investment in your future that will pay dividends in all stages and platforms of your life. There aren't words to express the degree to which my time with him has influenced my development as a musician and as a person. Zack Potts, former Student

ACHIM REUS
bio//

I began playing the trumpet at age nine and switched to the French horn when I was 18 years old.  At age 21, after having studied with Professor Erich Penzel at the Conservatory of Music in Cologne, Germany, I won the Principal Horn position of the Frankfurt/Main Opera. Three years later I was appointed the Principal Horn position of the prestigious Radio Symphony Orchestra Stuttgart, Germany.

During my 20 year tenure with the Radio Symphony Orchestra Stuttgart, serving as a long time member of the acclaimed German Brass and having played as a substitute in the world-renowned Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, I have been fortunate to have played with some of the most famous conductors in the world including Claudio Abbado, Sir Simon Rattle, Sir Georg Solti, James Levine, Trevor Pinnock, Giuseppe Sinopoli, Carlo Maria Giullini, Daniel Barenboim, Sir Roger Norrington, Lorin Maazel, Herbert Blomstedt, Sir Donald Runnicles, Georges Pretre, Zubin Mehta, Sir Colin Davis, Sir Neville Marriner, Kurt Sanderling, Erich Leinsdorf,  Bernhard Haitink, and Pierre Boulez.
As a professional musician, I have played on more the 50 recordings and have performed extensively throughout the globe.

I enjoy being a guest clinician and private instructor at middle and high schools in the Athens and Greater Atlanta Area and on a weekly basis I coach well over 100 horn students. I also work with brass sections from schools in  Forsyth County, Gwinnett County and Fulton County. My horn studio has currently 25 students from age 11-25 and many of them are participating in All State Bands, 14 of them in 2023. My students also are members of the Atlanta Youth Wind Symphony, Atlanta Youth Symphony Orchestra, Emory Youth Symphony Orchestra and the GHP program.

My student Zach Potts performed in 2019 at NPR  "From The Top" in Los Angeles, CA and received the $10,000 "Jack Kent Cooke Young Artist Award". See link below.

TESTIMONIALS

Jack, former Student

His infectious personality, knowledge and passion for music will inspire any young horn player. Taking lessons with Achim will transform your technique and
musicality. With the right motivation, your skill will grow faster than you ever thought was possible. But Achim is more than just a teacher. He's a friend and a mentor, your best ally and your biggest fan. If you love music as much as he does, he will do everything he can to help you fulfill your dream, just as he has done for me.

Eric Mason, Band Director

In my twenty years as a high school educator, no individual coach or teacher has had a bigger impact on my bands than Achim Reus. He has single handedly transformed our horn section, cluster-wide, in the three years he has worked with our students. He has doubled the retention of horn players in the program and transformed them into strong, musical players that help lead every band in our program.

Tyler, former Student

Thank you so much for being such a stellar teacher and that you have faith in me, it truly means a lot to me every time I have a lesson with you because I always walk out happy because I know what to fix and how to fix what I need to fix. You have essentially restored my confidence as a performer since the beginning and your passion for teaching horn really inspires me and I aspire to keep on growing. Horn lessons are my favorite part of the week because I'm always so eager to learn the details of what music has to offer and your energy is so contagious that it has transferred to me when I'm practicing alone. It's like I almost hear your voice in my head sometimes and I can't wait to see what the rest of our time together with lessons has to offer! With your help I got accepted into the "Schwob School of Music" at Columbus State University. Thank you so much for being such an amazing teacher.

Bethany

We cannot say enough wonderful things about Mr. Reus! His positivity is contagious, and his teaching approach is amazing. Working with him our daughter is not only learning how to play the French Horn beautifully, but she is also developing a respect, understanding, and love for music. Mr. Reus brings inspiration, enthusiasm, and encouragement to those who know him. He truly goes above and beyond for his students and provides unparalleled musical knowledge and experience. Mr. Reus is the positive presence that parents wish their child will have the opportunity to meet in life. It is an honor to know him and to have a daughter learn from him. We are forever grateful, Mr. Reus!
